a room without room

Our room is Tokyo is, to use Maya's phraseology, "Awww, so cute!" It is, in other words, tiny. That's the rep of Japanese hotel rooms: They're small as fuck but efficient and, if you have the proper frame of mind, cozy. Our room in the Oak Hotel in Ueno fits this description to a tee. There's a hard but not uncomfortable futon matress tucked into the corner, floor space that's maybe two-and-a-half times that matress, a TV set that's basically just a 15-inch computer monitor, a seemingly miniaturized chair and desk, what looks like a child's tea maker, two truly minuscule trash cans (think the proportions of a big Coke bottle), and best of all, an ensuite bathroom the size of an airplane bathroom plus a tub/shower that I have to duck down to fit into (it also has a myterious sulfurous smell). Here's Maya looking "aww, so cute" herself in one of the traditional robes that come with the room, showing off said bathroom's (lack of) space.

The damn dwarfish room has done its job so far though. Our first night here we were lucky enough to have Japan hit by a major typhoon. Insane winds howled outside all night and torrential rain pelted the windows and walls. But our room was quiet and homey, and when Maya passed out around 8pm Japan-time, and I followed, about 2 hours later, we slept like bears in winter.
